Hugh Harrison Conservation were commissioned to work as part of a multidisciplinary team of conservators on the restoration, repair and replacement of timber panelling of the Grill Room at the Café Royal, Piccadilly following a devastating fire in 2010.
The Grill Room is Grade II listed and forms part of The Quadrant (Historic England List Number 1227631). Although largely rebuilt by Sir Henry Tanner in the 1920’s, the Grill Room contains aspects of a sumptuous mid-19th century Rococo style interior by Archer & Green with an enriched fibrous plaster ceiling and ceiling paintings, gadroon cornicing, gilt caryatids and mirrors, and wall panelling, which had been dismantled and relocated from its 1865 location, the Domino Room.
The team were commissioned through Cliveden Conservation to strip, protect and finish existing surviving panelling, repair panelling, skirting and doors with new timber inserts and associated fittings, and provide new panelling where applicable.
